Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines. ScienceThis is, of course, a large and diverse field. It is one of the few fields where most departments are defined by the traditional disciplines, but increasing numbers of courses and departments, schools and centres are interdisciplinary and/or aiming to apply scientific expertise to problems of practise and policy. Most course work programs are of the latter kind and most, but not all, demand a science-based first degree for entry. There are an increasing number of graduate diplomas, and even graduate courses, as well as masters programs. Science as a whole is one of the biggest research fields, and Australia is, relative to its size, an impressive contributor to the world’s scientific research effort. Around half of all first-degree graduates in the sciences go directly on to further study. A disproportionate number of research students are in the mainstream disciplines, but there are also many cross-disciplinary and applied research opportunities provided by research centres (including the Commonwealth-funded cooperative research centres) and the APA(I) scholarships, which encourage research not only across disciplinary boundaries but also across sectoral and organisational boundaries. Depending on your particular bent you may find specialisations of interest in a number of fields including Agriculture, Computing/IT, Environment, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Science.
