Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Nursing

Nursing is one of the newest higher education fields of study, and postgraduate studies are newer still. The field is still growing, and is currently dominated by an array of course work programs which allow all kinds of career moves. Some are designed for nursing professionals with various qualifications and experience who want to upgrade their qualifications and/or enter new specialisations. However an increasing number of postgraduate courses are aimed at combating nursing shortages, by providing for members of various professions or paraprofessions wanting to enter the nursing field to obtain nursing-related skills and qualifications. In some situations this almost creates a two-tiered field – those nurses with bachelor degrees, and those having entered from another field that possess master’s degrees.

Nursing is among the most feminised of all fields of postgraduate study; only one in ten students is male. Depending on your particular bent you may find specialisations of interest in Health Services & Support, and perhaps even in fields as diverse as Education & Training or Social Work.
