Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Architecture & Building

This is a very small and specialised field of study. External students, women and in some instances, international students have been in fairly limited supply. There are four main areas to this field. Architecture looks at the art and science of designing buildings and structures. Property and construction focus on the actual building process. Landscape architecture concerns site and land design, rather than individual building design; urban planning looks at land use planning on a town or citywide basis.

Most coursework programs offer upgrade specialisations to those working in the field. There are some courses that allow for graduates and professionals without relevant backgrounds to enter the field, and others that allow architects and their cousins to expand into neighbouring areas such as management. Research programs are quite limited.

Those entering this field should be aware that ties to the volatile building and construction
industry make it more vulnerable to the economic cycle.

If you are interested in this area you should also browse Engineering and Design and perhaps even the Environment profiles. Business & Management may also be pertinent if you are interested in the planning and management side of things.
