Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Education & Training

Graduate studies in education are of four kinds: ‘career change’ courses for graduates wanting to become education professionals (usually school teachers); special studies for practising educational professionals to extend their skills; education subjects for those from non-education backgrounds; and research degrees. These categories blur in some masters programs and in the new professional doctorates which combine course work with a research thesis or report. Because there are so many teachers (10 teachers for every doctor, for example), and because they are such big consumers of graduate studies, the range of courses and institutions offering them is very wide. Most courses are available part-time, and many via distance education as well. If you are interested in an upgrade or specialisation course you may want to keep an eye on the career options it will make available, and on the prospects in relevant areas of the job market. Some courses lead directly into the other careers, should you want one – note the growing number of courses in adult education, workplace education, etc., which could take you into a human resource development job in industry or one of the big public sector agencies. Many specialisations, ranging from computer education to counselling, could open up other career options.

A sub-field of this discipline that continues to grow is that of TESOL/TEFL courses. As English becomes more and more the global lingua franca, Australians have become very popular overseas as English teachers. These courses can vary greatly in time (from a few weeks up to a year or so) as well as in reputation, so check the requirements first for the country in which you intend to teach. Some countries, in particular China, will prefer qualified teachers who also possess a TESOL qualification, while other countries are not so particular.

There are many other fields which might appeal an education graduate, depending on the subjects you would be interested in teaching – anything from Mathematics to Creative Arts to Languages.
