Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Law

Legal education has undergone several transformations. It has been academicised, and its relationship with the legal profession continues to loosen. Some professionals and teachers have declared the gap between the profession and its students to be too wide, however, perhaps indicating that another change in academic direction is approaching. Full-time university staff have now virtually replaced the part-time instructor in law departments. Research has taken root, although it is still struggling to attract postgraduates. Scholarly specialisations and postgraduate programs have proliferated. Underwriting all this change is sheer growth in numbers of students (undergraduate and postgraduate), of courses, and of law schools.

Most programs are aimed at members of the profession or at the very least law graduates, and aim to add specialist strings to the professional bow – in environmental law (especially popular), corporate law, Asian law, media law and many more. Most postgraduates are in course work programs (diploma and masters levels), some are in masters or the new professional doctorates which combine course work with research, and a few are doing pure research degrees.

A new field of postgraduate legal education is para-legal studies. This is small and still finding its professional and academic feet. The very small numbers enrolled are almost exclusively engaged in course work programs. Entry requirements are usually modest or stated in very general terms.

Depending on your particular bent, you may find specialisations of interest dotted across fields ranging from Accounting and Business & Management to Arts/Humanities.
