Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Music

Music is somewhat unique in that while employment options in the music industry may be boosted by the completion of postgraduate studies, in general, it is ability rather than the amount of study completed that will be the overriding criterion. With that said, postgraduate study in this field can definitely provide skills and knowledge that would be difficult to acquire through other means. Opportunities exist for both research or coursework-based degrees, from honours all the way up to a PhD. Courses may be performance or theory based, or a combination of the two. Most courses require a bachelors degree in music, but some provide preliminary studies courses for those without degrees. On top of this, there will likely be a musical performance requirement for entry. This field can be surprisingly political, so it is important to gauge the reputation of an institution before you make your decision.

This field can share a lot in common with Arts/Humanities, particularly in the field of music research and history, so browse that profile also.
