Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Communications

This is a new, small and – if undergraduate cutoffs are any guide – appealing field. Like other new fields there is little or no research tradition. Some courses study ‘communications’ (mainly via ‘media studies’) but most aim, or claim, to provide skills in journalism (the most common of the professions catered to), publishing, writing, public relations, the production of printed or other published material, and other related activities. Most are, in other words, career conversion, rather than specialist upgrade courses. None of the occupations concerned are closely regulated and course-entry barriers in the field are correspondingly low. Most providers offer the very accessible option of a graduate certificate.

If you are interested in this field you should also browse through the profiles of Arts/Humanities, Design and Social Sciences.
