Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Engineering

Engineering is a big, well-established field. Its familiar sub-disciplines (chemical, civil, mechanical etc.) are, however, now supplemented by those which marry standard offerings with emerging technologies to generate, for example, biological, communications, and IT specialisations. These are overlaid by studies which relate engineering to fields of activity such as local government, water management, air conditioning, environmental management, pulp and paper production, and so on. The generally accepted view, strongly pushed by the IEAust (Institute of Engineers, Australia), is that the economies of the futures will demand more and more engineering expertise and engineers, although at the moment the market for graduates depends on the field of engineering. Engineers are big consumers of further education and training, and the profession has an unusually strong role in its provision. The majority of those enrolled in this fi eld are doing course work rather than research, typically professional upgrade or re-specialisation rather than conversion courses for those coming in from outside. This reflects increasing mobility of engineers between organisations and areas of responsibility as well as the shortening half-life of engineering knowledge.

Engineering has a strong research tradition and research career path. The field is unusual in having many research/teaching centres which bring together the efforts of universities and other agencies, many from the private sector. Note, too, the availability of APA(I) scholarships which support research student wishing to work across organisational boundaries.

Depending on where your interests lie within this broad field, you should also browse specialisations in Agriculture, Architecture & Building, IT/Computing or Design. If you wish to branch out from Engineering into Management and related activities, see that field also.
