Postgraduate Study

Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

Agriculture

Courses in this field fall into three broad groups: research programs, always requiring an honours degree or equivalent, although not necessarily in this field; course work programs which upgrade the knowledge of those working in the area; and quite a wide range of courses which combine a focus on agriculture with activities such as marketing, management, education or regional development, or with new and emerging areas such as conservation, land management and environmental science. There are only a few big providers in the area, but distance education courses have widened the options.

Agriculture is a long-established field which draws a high proportion of its postgraduates into research. As those with first degrees in the area will know, many courses are dominated by the science and technology side to the exclusion of things which, according to one report, employers of graduates say are just as important – ‘communication skills, interpersonal skills, flexibility, adaptability, and problem-solving ability, leadership skills,’ not to mention ‘practical experience’. But with its typically small numbers growing, and a now reasonable proportion of women, it has the potential to develop a new dimension.

If you are interested in this field you should also check out the profiles on Environment, as well as Science. If your interest is in adding expertise in Business & Management, Education or Accounting to your skill base, see those profiles also.
