Postgraduate Options

Postgraduate study is an increasingly popular option for many graduates. Approximately 30 per cent of graduates go on to further study, whether part-time or full-time, research or coursework. If you are contemplating postgraduate study this section provides useful information about postgraduate options in different disciplines.

IT/Computing

It hardly needs to be said that this has been a field of expansion. A generation ago there were no computing courses in Australia. Now they are offered at more than 50 campuses. While undergraduate numbers have plateaued over the last couple of years, demand for postgraduate study is rising as the industry again becomes more competitive and complex. There is a rough-and-ready distinction to be drawn between computer science and engineering courses (which are mainly offered by the longer established universities) and courses in information systems and various kinds of applied computing (mainly offered by the newer institutions). Some courses are aimed at graduates/professionals without computing expertise, but there are also a relatively high proportion of upgrade/specialist courses. A restricted range of courses are available by distance education.

If you are interested in this field you should also see what is on offer in Engineering. Courses with some computing content are also offered in fields such as Accounting, Business & Management and Design, as well as in a number of occupation-specific fields.
