Developing Your New Graduate Recruit

Professional Development

Graduate recruits are understandably eager to perform in, and contribute to, their new organisation. This can be both good and bad, as some recruits will want to ‘run before they can walk’, and their enthusiasm and confidence can be difficult to harness and channel appropriately. Sensitivity is needed here. Organisations should endeavour to build the spirit of their new recruits, not break it; neither should they drive their new recruits into the ground with overwork simply because the recruit was bubbling with enthusiasm.

Many organisations now see that a broad range of experiences and abilities facilitate strong future performance, and there is a match between the goals of the organisation and the graduate recruit. Efforts should be made to provide the recruit with a range of activities in different functional and geographical areas. This provides the breadth of experience that companies require, as well as the variety and constant stimulation new graduate recruits appreciate.
