Developing Your New Graduate Recruit

Personal Development

In addition to the graduate recruit's short-term development goals, long-term goals should be constructed and worked towards. Many large companies will have a formal procedure for managing personal development, but graduate recruits in companies of any size will have their own vision for their future. To ensure that the graduate recruits stay with their employer for as long as possible (assuming this is the employer's wish too), it is wise to manage these expectations and help the graduate recruits to work towards this goal.

The personal development plan usually includes a defined future role and time scale, and a series of development activities or positions; these will facilitate the acquisition of skills and experiences necessary to equip the graduate recruit for that future role. These activities may well continue beyond the training period and into the first substantive positions within the organisation. There needs to be a set of guidelines for the process to be effective, and compromises may have to be made by both parties to achieve a mutually agreeable outcome.
