Reviewing Your Graduate Recruitment Program

Why Review Your Program?

At the end of any recruitment exercise, it is tempting to sit back say, "Thank goodness that's over!" and move on to the next job on your list. Within a small organisation, the graduate recruiter is probably responsible for other non-recruitment work. In the intense activity just completed, some work will have been left at the bottom of the in-tray for too long. In a large organisation, where the graduate recruiter is full-time, thoughts might already be turning to the next process, setting up the campus visits, improving links with certain university Careers Services or teaching departments, and so on. Clearly, in companies that recruit annually and in large numbers, using feedback to inform the next year's process is vital.

Before moving on to your next task, it is worth reviewing the activity you have just completed. Try to assess how well it went, and what you can do to make the process better the next time. Even in a relatively simple or ‘one-off’ recruitment exercise, there are strong arguments for thorough and professional management of the process. Applicants will have paid a good deal of attention to the recruitment process and it affects their view of both the organisation and of you as an individual. One day, those very applicants may be customers or suppliers, or perhaps even your boss! A post-implementation review gives you a chance to improve the process.
