Information and Communication Technologies
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) represents one of the most exciting areas of employment for new graduates, with many finding work as computing professionals in the finance, property and business services sector, as well as the primary ICT sector.
The industry has been one of the fastest-growing areas of the Australian economy. Since the internet began to open up to commercial and individual use in 1994, internet traffic and applications have grown exponentially. In the process, computers and internet communication have become essential in nearly all workplaces.
The work
The range of occupational pathways in ICT continues to expand as technology penetrates more and more aspects of daily life. Common areas of work for ICT graduates include software engineering and programming, systems analysis and administration, general ICT management, multimedia development and ICT support.

Employment opportunities for ICT graduates are very strong at present, with research suggesting an ongoing skills shortage. In 2009, the ICT industry did not succumb to the effects of the global financial crisis (GFC) compared with many other sectors; 76.2 per cent of ICT workers were in full-time employment (Australian Computer Society, 2009). Looking ahead to 2013–14, telecommunications is projected to have the highest employment growth within the sector, with a 2.4 per cent increase per annum creating 11,700 jobs (www.skillsinfo.gov.au).
The industry has developed a unique corporate culture in which flexible employment conditions are commonplace.
ICT skills transfer easily from one country to the next, so experienced ICT professionals can expect to find career opportunities almost anywhere in the developed world.

Money matters
Graduate salary ranges for selected relevant occupations are as follows:
- Database/systems administrator: $45,000–$63,000
- ICT business/systems analyst: $47,000–$60,000
- ICT support technician: $36,400–$51,500
- Multimedia specialist/web developer: $40,000–$55,000
- Software/applications programmer: $44,–$56,000
