Virtual Careers Fair’s Success Continues

The Virtual Careers Fair 2007 marked another fruitful occasion for student, employer and careers professional interaction. VCF demonstrates GCA’s ongoing commitment to promoting the best possible career outcomes for students and graduates, and shows the importance students and graduate recruiters place on these events.

VCF 2007 was placed in the safe and dedicated hands of GCA’s Research/Surveys Officer, Anton Griffith. All staff at GCA marvelled at his dedication and seemingly tireless efforts – how does he do it! Believe it or not Anton is looking forward to being involved in VCF 2008!

GCA wishes to thank the generous sponsorship of ACER, Graduate Opportunities, Testgrid Australia, Unigrad and the University of New England, as well as Careers Service volunteers from universities in Australia and New Zealand. Their sessions were consistently well received by the students and graduates.

And how did VCF 2007 make out?

  • Students and recent graduates from over 50 different institutions participated.
  • Participants were based in Australia (80 per cent), New Zealand (nine per cent), the UK and US, Asia, Europe and beyond.
  • A survey of VCF participants revealed the most common fields of study were: Business/Commerce (38 per cent); Arts/Humanities (21 per cent); Sciences (15 per cent); Accounting/Taxation and IT/Telecommunications (14 per cent).
  • Ninety-nine employers exhibited over the 11 days representing the public, private and not-for-profit sectors, a marked improvement on 2006.
  • The 14 days from the start of VCF 2007 saw 111,000 page views.

What the students had to say:

“Very informative, provided useful guidelines on job hunting; preparation for each stage in getting a job; and gives some ideas of which companies are related to my field.”

“The VCF really opened my eyes to the possibilities available to graduates. I found it extremely helpful.”

“Great. Had heaps of good info and many industry contacts!”

“Well organised, interesting, a great experience overall.”

“I thought it was a very useful forum to be able to talk with representatives from a wide range of potential employers in real-time. Chat transcripts were an excellent idea in case you were unable to make it to the discussion.”

“I had a positive experience. It was really helpful in that students were able to directly communicate with employers in the chat rooms. Also, it was good to have all impartial graduate information on the one site.”

Thanks to all participants! GCA looks forward to hearing from you for what we are sure will be the bigger and better Virtual Careers Fair 2008!
