NAGCAS President Speaks on Graduate Recruitment

The busy graduate recruitment period is about to start for 2002, and Careers Services across Australia are finalising their plans to support students in their pursuit of the best options for their futures. The changing world of work in the Graduate Recruitment field means that many employers have moved to online marketing and email contact with prospective employees. In line with this “virtual” contact, the use of a “virtual careers fair” as run by the University of New England this year will give students from regional areas a chance to have contact with employers that would otherwise be hard to access.

It is also good to see that employers still see the value of coming onto campus to meet students and allow them to find out personally what it is like to work in a corporate environment and to ask questions of other recent graduates. For some students the corporate world can seem out of reach, or for ‘other’ people. Meeting people who work in those environments and finding out that they are real people creates a more realistic picture of the world of work. It also encourages them to apply for graduate positions, as they realise that there is certainly a chance of being successful with their applications.
