Student Career Development Takes A Step Up At VU

A panoramic vista encompassing the Maribyrnong River, Flemington Racecourse, city, suburbs and hills greeted seventy visitors and colleagues who joined Victoria University careers staff to celebrate the opening of their new Student Career Development Centre on Friday April 19th. The Centre was formally opened by the University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Jim Falk.

A New Base For Career Services

Situated on the top floor of Building M at the Footscray Park campus, the new Centre is home to Director Joanne Tyler; Graduate Employer Liaison Officer Melinda Bufton; Careers Educators Kathy Andison, Melanie McDonald, Sue Mate and Sue Oldham; new Employer Liaison Assistant Marnie Long and Receptionist/Administrator Marion Gray. Apart from the offices, it boasts a spacious foyer with eight computer terminals and hard copy careers resources, as well as an interview room and a training room for workshops. It provides the base for services to all VU campuses.

Programmes offered so far this year include the usual run of events, plus the launch of a student portfolio system; ‘Careers in the Caf’ at lunchtimes when careers educators visit the cafeterias to offer informal careers advice; resume checking via email; a Career Planning elective available to all higher education students; the Career Bridge Mentoring programme; a Careers Fair “The Graduate Employment Stakes”; and participation in the Young Achievement Australia and HEWSO competitions. A Skills Fest, in conjunction with the State Emergency Service and Deakin University, will be run in semester two.
