Graduate Careers Australia
The Graduate Grapevine – Number 4, June 2006
ADIEU ONE ….. ADIEU TOO…….
Recent events have caused us to say farewell to two long-serving members of the GCA extended family and celebrate their contributions to the graduate and higher education arenas.
Professor Dennis Gibson
At the GCA Annual General Meeting held on 3 April 2006, Professor Dennis Gibson retired as Chair of the GCA Board of Directors, having held that position since March 1999. A dinner to recognise Dennis’ contribution and thank him for his commitment to the work of GCA was held in Melbourne on the evening of 3 April. Former and current Board members and staff were invited to attend, along with Professor Margaret Gardner, Vice-Chancellor and President at RMIT and, of course, Dennis’ wife, Professor Cathrine Bull. He was acknowledged in delightful reminiscences by Andrew Millett, Bruce Guthrie, Roger Bartley, Richard Johnstone, Joanne Tyler and Cindy Tilbrook.
Joanne Tyler
December 2005 saw the resignation of Joanne, not only as President of NAGCAS, but also from the GCA Board of Directors, where she had served since 1994 (GCA’s longest serving Board member at that time).
NAGCAS members came together in May for a dinner to celebrate Joanne’s significant contribution to the success of NAGCAS during her term as President and on the Management Committee. Highlights of the evening were an historical depiction of ‘the life of Joanne’, narrated by GCA’s Di Rachinger (the more respectable pictures are reproduced on page 15 of the PDF), and a poetic tribute from Jeannie King, also reproduced with kind permission (and with no admissions of liability on our behalf).
Dennis and Joanne, GCA and NAGCAS wish to thank you for your contributions, you’ve certainly left big shoes to fill!
All Hail to the Chief Jeannie King
All praise to ex-president Joanne, Who seems to always have had a plan, Or at least could see the bigger picture, The way forward, the new ‘careers scripture’.
She has been president on two occasions, And a GCA director for long liaisons, She has travelled near and travelled far, Worked long hours and occasionally drunk at the bar.
She actually helped write the NAGCAS constitution And can quote chapter and verse with no confusion But with all that, she is not a boring old codger Wait a minute has anyone seen good old Roger?
Her commitment, dedication, good humour and hard work, Means she rarely gets angry or goes berserk, And in actual fact she only ever uses profanity, When it is actually needed, to safeguard her sanity.
And with due credit to her employer and her professional ethics When at conferences people go to bed early and be pathetic Those of us in the know can safely report to you now That if she’s not last to bed, she’s second last and how.
So thanks to Joanne for your leadership and drive We’re lucky you’ve hung around to lead and survive Your move to director at your new home, VU And for NAGCAS your efforts are appreciated through and through.
