Profile: Professor Nicholas Saunders, Chair GCA Board

After a long and distinguished career in academia and a recent association with Graduate Careers Australia (GCA) as a most valued Board member, Professor Nicholas Saunders MD, FRACP has been appointed as Chair of the GCA Board.

Professor Saunders is a graduate of the University of Sydney and undertook his specialist physician training at Royal North Shore Hospital.  In 1974 Nick spent two years as a Research Fellow at McMaster University Medical Centre in Canada, followed by two years as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He went on to become the Head of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine at Flinders University of South Australia (1993-98), and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University (1998-2003).

Professor Saunders commenced his current term as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Newcastle in October 2004, following a long standing association with the university and the Hunter Area Health Service. Nick was a foundation member of the Faculty of Medicine (1978-1992) and Professor of Medicine from 1983. He practiced as a specialist in respiratory and sleep medicine at the Royal Newcastle Hospital (1978-1990) and then the John Hunter Hospital (1990-92), where Professor Saunders was Chair of the Department of Medicine. Nick has also worked at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital and Wallsend District Hospital for more than a decade.

Over the years Professor Saunders has served on many state and national committees and councils relevant to medicine and higher education. Nick was Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council (2000-03) and was a member of the Higher Education Council, the Prime Minister’s Science Engineering and Innovation Council, the Australian Research Council, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Council, and the Committee of Deans of Australian Medical Schools (Chair 2000-02).

Professor Saunders was awarded the Centenary Medal from the Commonwealth Government for his contribution to academic medicine in 2002.

All of us at GCA see Professor Saunders’ elevation to Chair of the Board as a very positive move, and we are sure Nick will continue his invaluable contribution to our aims and objectives.
