The Graduate Grapevine – Number 3, March 2006

Profile: Peter McIlveen, NAGCAS President & GCA Board Member

Peter McIlveen is the Manager of the Careers Employment and Equity unit at USQ’s Student Services. He is a psychologist by training, and is keenly interested in career counselling, especially applied research and development into constructivist and narrative career counselling techniques. He is currently working toward a PhD investigating a constructivist career counselling and assessment process. He teaches a course on lifelong career development within the USQ Master of Education. He also operates a small psychological consulting business, specialising in the provision of career counselling and psychotherapy. Prior to his work in the career development industry, he worked within the acute and community mental health sector, in which he focused mainly on individuals with severe mental health problems and the assessment and psychotherapeutic treatment of these problems. He was a member of a team of clinicians who provided services to western Queensland, regularly flying out to visit rural communities.

Peter was the Qld President of NAGCAS before he took on the role of national President. There are a number of issues confronting NAGCAS and he aims to work through these so that it is well positioned to implement the national standards for career practitioners. The Management Committee will be reviewing NAGCAS in 2006 and a broad discussion paper will soon be presented. He recognises the enormous potential within NAGCAS, and would like to see it better expressed and acknowledged. He believes that career development workers within Australian universities can be positioned as leaders of evidence-based practice and critical consumers of career theory.
