Information Technology

The following industry career profile, Careers for Information Technology Graduates, was made possible by the generous sponsorship and assistance of the Australian Computer Society. Visit the ACS now at www.acs.org.au .

The terms ICT (Information and Communication Technology), IT (Information Technology), IT&T (Information Technology & Telecommunication), Computing and Computer Science are used very broadly and often interchangeably. They all incorporate the different ways in which we utilise technology to manage information and operational systems. Some general comments about this kind of employment include:

A career in Information Technology provides an exciting, challenging job with a huge range of options.

An IT career does not mean just working in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industries themselves, but because IT is used by all business, government and schools, the choice of industry to work in is as large as the economy itself.” (Source: Australian Computer Society)

ICT is an enabler; required for the functioning of all areas of society. It therefore has an impact on the economy, and is in turn affected by economic rises and downturns.

Working in ICT is possible at any point in your career, but a tertiary qualification greatly increases the options that are open to you.

…even students in school are working in ‘the industry’ at nights and weekends, sometimes developing websites, tutoring members of their families in computer skills and even helping small businesses make better use of computers in their work.

The range of tasks and streams within an IT career is huge. It is expected that in one’s working life three separate careers might be typical, and in IT one need not leave the sector at all in order to change careers!” (Source: Australian Computer Society)
