The GCCA has again had a busy and productive period, with the very successful introduction of the revised gradlink website, an expansion in our range of publications, the launch of oGDS (the online version of the survey reports and the inaugural “Getting that Grad” development days for graduate employers. International Education – Graduate Outcomes International education is one of the most important facets not only of higher education in Australia, but increasingly of the total economic activity of the country. In 2003 education is now the third largest services export, and the eighth largest overall export earner. It is worth more than $5 billion in national income, and accounts for approximately 12% of Australia’s trade in services. Graduates’ Job Search: Adopt and Adapt Wollongong’s Careers Service Internship Program in 2003 The University of Wollongong’s Internship Program was first offered as a pilot in 2002 and has just completed its second successful year in 2003. The program was developed to give a select group of students from the University of Wollongong an insight into the day-to-day and longer term activities of the careers service. State of the Graduate Labour Market The market for graduates in any one year is affected by a number of factors, including demographic, economic and industry cycles, and unforeseen events. Following September 11 and the Bali bombing crises, the last few years have seen a flat market for graduates, with downturns in the number of graduates employed in the UK, the USA and Australia, and a depressed graduate market throughout Asia. Getting that Grad Debuts in 2003 At the end of October 2003 as students moved into exam time and the graduate careers community paused to take stock after a hectic recruitment season, the GCCA held its inaugural graduate recruitment day, Getting That Grad. Students Respond to the Challenge Four hundred students from RMIT University and The University of Melbourne competed in the annual University Challenge at the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday 16 September 2003.
